How To Complete a Background Check in Bexar County TX
If you want a background check, you can request one through the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. However, before you request one it’s important to understand what a background check is and when you may need to have one.
There are two kinds of background checks: Personal and Professional. The name “personal background check” may sound misleading because you can conduct a personal background check on anyone, not just yourself.
If you simply want to conduct an informal search on someone’s background using the resources outlined in this article, that is commonly referred to as a personal background check. Not only can a personal background check be performed on anyone, but you can do so for any reason as long as you are not using the information to commit a crime (e.g., harassment, stalking or intimidation).
A professional background check is what most people think of when they hear the term background check. A professional background check may be required for:
- Completing a rental application
- Purchasing a firearm or applying for a license to carry a concealed weapon
- State licensing requirements for individuals working in child or elderly care
- Completing a job application
- Applying for a security clearance
If you need or are being requested to get a professional background check, it is important to know you have certain rights that do not exist for personal background checks. First, as part of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, an individual must request your consent before performing a professional background check.17 You can also request a copy of the report and dispute any information contained in it.
Secondly, professional background checks cannot be used for any discriminatory purpose.
If you are discriminated against as a result of information contained in a professional background check you have protections through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).18 Through the EEOC you can get information on filing a charge using their online portal.
Professional background checks themselves can vary in the level of detail involved. For instance, a basic professional background check (Level 1) is typically limited to a name search and is often limited to a specific state, county or even city. Some background checks are much broader and involve a nationwide fingerprint search through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
You can obtain a background check through the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office either in person or by mail. If you would like to make a request in person, you can go to the:
Bexar County Sheriff’s Office
200 North Comal Street
San Antonio, Texas 78207
Before you go in person, make sure you contact them at (210)-335-6302 to check their availability. Their office hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30AM – 5:30PM. When you go in person you must bring a valid government ID (e.g., driver’s license) and payment for the fee (fees can range from $3.00 – $8.00).
If you would like to mail in your request, you can send a request to:
Bexar County Sheriff’s Office
Attn: Central Records
200 North Comal Street
San Antonio, Texas 78207
If you are going to mail in your request, you will need to provide a fingerprint card from any local law enforcement agency that provides fingerprinting services. In addition, you will need to provide a copy of your driver’s license, a money order for $8.00 and your contact information.
You can also get a Texas Background check from either the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services or the Texas Department of Public Safety. Through these agencies you can request either a name-based background check or a fingerprint background check.
